In August of 1989, Jim and Laura Barnett were married and moved to Southern California from the San Joaquin Valley.  They both immediately began teaching in the Etiwanda School District in Rancho Cucamonga and started attending the Vineyard Community Church in Pomona, CA.  They had no idea that this was just the beginning of God’s bigger plan for them.

Jim and Laura began actively participating in ministry within the church.  After a few years, Jim was asked to join the staff as the children’s ministry and community outreach pastor.  He did this while maintaining his teaching position in Rancho Cucamonga.

At the time, Jim felt torn between his community in Rancho Cucamonga and his church in Pomona.  Jim wanted to bring what God was doing in and through the Vineyard to Rancho.  As it turned out, there were others who felt the same way.

Jim (with his wife’s blessing) felt called to gather a group of people together to start a Vineyard church in Rancho Cucamonga.  With the full endorsement and blessing of the Pomona Vineyard, 18 people met and strategized about how to realize God’s desire to bring the Vineyard to Rancho.

In October of 2004, The Neighborhood – A Vineyard Church was launched with the vision to “love God and neighbor”.  A single question solidified the mission of the church:

“If your church was to close its doors, would your community notice?  Would they care?  Would they cheer?  Or would they be sad?”

From the beginning, The Neighborhood wanted to do more than just the status quo.  This church would be a place that is active in transforming and impacting the community for Christ. The desire has always been to partner with organizations that are helping to meet the needs of the people in the community.

Currently, The Neighborhood partners with Foothill Family Shelter, the Etiwanda School District, and the Etiwanda Excellence in Education (E-3) Foundation, among others.  The church has also actively participated in local church partnerships including Church Without Walls and Serve Day projects.

The Neighborhood is continually seeking new ways to serve the community and bring God’s kingdom to all people.

About the Vineyard

In 1982, John Wimber, who had been a pastor and church consultant, was asked to serve as the leader of a newly formed association of about nine churches (all in Southern California) that now call themselves The Vineyard, USA.

As the leader of this new movement, John pastored the pastors and trained and encouraged the planting of churches internationally. Worldwide, Vineyard churches have been planted in many nations including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Russia, Turkey, throughout the European continent, Africa, Southeast Asia, and in Australia. God has shown us, however, that His desire is not just to build the Vineyard, but that we should promote His Kingdom, and encourage, build, and love the whole church.
